8. Local Libraries
We support our extraordinary local libraries as places to learn for all ages. The Hotchkiss Library of Sharon (5 minutes) and Millbrook Library (18 minutes), both offer program for young ones as part of their ongoing offerings. If you are traveling with little ones, consider joining for some community reading and play time in a cozy setting.
9. Skeet Shooting + Fly Fishing
For those 12 years and older, sign up for some outdoor instruction at Orvis Sandanona (20 minutes from Troutbeck). Wingshooting, upland hunting and flyfishing one and two-day private instruction is available. Of course, all the gear is available to purchase or borrow right there at the Orvis shop.
10. Sunny Day Play
The funnest playground around is in nearby Stanfordville at their Recreation Center. It has an enormous fort-like structure for climbing, sliding, swinging and pretending, a zipline, whirlywheel, and special area for those under five.
11. Yes, there is a local zoo with over 170 species...
Trevor Zoo at Millbrook School (8 miles from Troutbeck) is the only zoo at a high school in America. With over 170 species of both indigenous and endangered wildlife, all cared for by students for environmental science and animal behavior study, the zoo is an extraordinary place to visit for children of all ages. It’s open everyday, by reservation only. Book your reservation here.
12. Shopping
Here are our favorite spots to shop within 20 minutes of our doorstep:
Millbrook: Creel & Gow, Orangerie, Merritt Bookstore, Juniper
Millerton: Oblong Books, Westerlind, Montage Antiques + frankly all of main street!
Amenia: Tent, Le Jardin
13. Extraordinary Dining Close By
There are so places to eat well in our corner of Dutchess County (and just beyond!). We love to dine at Stissing House, Pink House, White Hart Inn, Wassaic Lantern Inn, Willa Bar in Millerton, and for very kid-friendly, peasy lunch there, Oakhurst Diner.
