2. Mountains

From Troutbeck, there's easy access to nearby family-friendly ski slopes (weather dependent), such as Mohawk Mountain, Catamount and Butternut, where one can also "uphill" adventure via skinning or snow shoeing (details at Catamount here and Mohawk here), and don't forget about the fun of tubing!

3. Equal Beauty, less steep

Cross-country skiing and snow shoeing is even closer: on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail (access point is a 5 minute drive from Troutbeck) or at nearby Wethersfield, one of the region’s most distinguished estates and gardens, where hiking, snow showing or cross country skiing is available on their maintained trails for $10 per day.

4. Horseback Riding

Walking distance from Troutbeck is Hope Rising Farm, a welcoming horse farm where beginners can take lessons on the sweet steeds. Call ahead to organize lessons for your child while you are at Troutbeck. For more rigorous lessons, Kildare Stables (8 miles from Troutbeck), offers private and group classes tailored to each student’s level, on the flat or over fences.

5. Scottish Highland Cattle Farm Tour + Carriage Rides

It's difficult to do justice of the cuteness of the Scottish Highland Cattle of Elk Ravine Farm, right here in Amenia. We also cannot over-emphasize how much fun the experiences at the ranch are. Book a tour and carriage ride for the whole family.

6. Art! Art! Art!

We are lucky beyond measure to work so closely (hand in hand and in close proximity to) Wassaic Project, the extraordinary non-profit arts organization in the next town over. In addition to their ongoing exhibits -- currently A Space Between Worlds, their Art Nest is open every Saturday (2-5pm) for any child to come in (with an adult) and make art. Want an easy, relaxed and delicious meal right after? Visit our friends at Lantern Inn, for woodfire pizza and satiating sides. Nearby, Studio 44 offers both a work and gallery space, helmed by local artist Claudia Munro Kerr, while slightly further afield at FotoDiary Gallery in Kent.
